Next year I'm moving to Hawai‘i to go get a Ph.D. (or at least give it my best shot). I heard once that when the space ship went to the moon, the guy who stayed on board the landing craft while the other two went out and walked around was the loneliest human in the galaxy, if you go by distance to all other people (you could measure by root-mean-square or something). Hawai‘i ranks pretty high by that metric.

It will be quite a change for you.  Having to remember to drive on the left side and learning to speak their language.
